Andrea Salinas has won the Democratic primary for the newly formed Oregon 6th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Almost since its inception, the election campaign has garnered much media attention, most notably Salinas’ opponent, Carrick Flynn, whose campaign was richly funded by the political action committee Protect Our Future (PAC) backed by billionaire FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Steikt. PAC paid for a flood of ads supporting Flynn.

Salinas won the seat with 38% of the vote, while Flynn came in second with 19%, with the remaining votes divided between seven other candidates.

Salinas had a solid political background and served three terms as a representative of the glorious Lake Oswego suburb of Portland in the House of Representatives. Prior to that, she was a lawmaker in Washington and worked for an environmental organization in Oregon. Flynn, a Oregon native who left the state after graduating from college in 2008 and returning in 2020, was lifted from the darkness with the support of the PAC.

Flynn also received $ 1 million in support from House Majority PAC, which is closely linked to Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Senator Elizabeth Warren opposed the move by supporting Salinas. Flynn appeared to be a serious contender in a poll published on May 7. Protect Our Future changed its advertising methods a few days later, changing from ads that mainly showed Flynn’s difficult childhood in rural areas to attacking Salinas and accusing her of being under the influence of the pharmaceutical industry.

The stated goal of Protect Our Future is “to help select candidates who have a long-term vision for policy-making […] guided by a series of key principles “that include prevention of pandemics and belief in science. These themes resonate with a philosophical policy called successful altruism, which both Flynn and Bankman-Fried are known to admire. Estimates of the amount Protect Our Future spends on Flynn’s campaign range from $ 8 million to $ 10 million.

“This is, by all accounts, about three times higher than any other Super PAC effort in any congressional primary in the country,” Jim Moore, director of political expansion at the McCall Center for Civic Engagement, told Cointelegraph in an email:

“The ads bought Flynn name recognition, not victory. They created a backlash among other candidates and apparently a large number of voters for external money who tried to buy a parliamentary seat.

Opponents of Flynn’s formed a united front in his condemnation, and the local media made much of Flynn’s loose ties with the state, his tainted polls and the potentially dubious motives of the PAC who supported him. The controversy soon provoked national controversy.

“Flynn’s political future in Oregon will depend on whether he becomes an active player in the political efforts of the state or local government,” Moore said. “If not, it will ultimately be a matter of time before a billionaire in cryptocurrencies and the PAC representations tried to rob Oregon’s new neighborhoods for reasons that were never made clear in the campaign.

Protect Our Future’s strong financial support has also been controversial in other election campaigns. PAC donations were used in advertisements from Jasmine Crockett’s opponent in the Texas District 30. Crockett has received about $ 1 million from PAC. Protect Our Future is also among the PACs choosing between Democratic candidates Carolyn Bourdeaux and Lucy McBath in the controversial battle for Georgia’s 7th district.

Flynn, Andreas and Michael Sadowsky, President of Protect Our Future, have not responded to requests from the Cointelegraph for comment.
